ABCD- The Core Formula Behind the Qi Movements Philosophy

Simple to Understand. Difficult to Execute.

There is no shortage of workouts in the fitness industry.

Apps.
Bootcamps.
Circuits.
Programs.
Machines.
Trends.

But very few people are actually being taught how to move well.

At Qi Movements, we believe there is a massive difference between:

exercising…

and

training the body intelligently.

That difference comes down to one thing:

Movement quality.

Everything we do at Qi Movements is filtered through a simple framework we call:

ABCD

It is the core formula behind our movement philosophy.

Simple to understand.
Difficult to execute consistently.

And when applied properly, it changes everything.

A-Alignment

Alignment is the foundation of movement.

At its core, alignment means maintaining:

a stable, neutral spine while moving under load.

Most people lose alignment the moment intensity increases.

They compensate by:

  • flaring the ribs

  • collapsing posture

  • arching the lower back

  • shifting weight poorly

  • losing pelvic control

Over time, these compensations create:

  • pain

  • instability

  • poor force transfer

  • joint irritation

  • dysfunctional movement patterns

At Qi Movements, alignment is non-negotiable.

We coach people to understand:

  • spinal positioning

  • pelvic alignment

  • rib cage positioning

  • head and neck alignment

  • stacked posture under load

Because the body generates force most efficiently from stable positions.

Without alignment, intensity becomes compensation.

B-Breathing

Breathing is one of the most overlooked aspects of fitness.

But breathing is not just about oxygen.

Breathing is stability.

Breathing is pressure management.

Breathing is movement control.

At Qi Movements, we teach:

  • diaphragmatic nasal breathing

  • lateral expansion of the rib cage

  • gut pressure creation

  • spinal stabilization

  • pelvic stabilization

  • tension breathing strategies under load

Proper breathing creates the internal pressure necessary to support a neutral spine.

This becomes essential when lifting weights, producing force, or stabilizing during movement.

Most people breathe shallowly through the chest.

This limits:

  • stability

  • recovery

  • movement efficiency

  • nervous system regulation

We teach clients how to use breathing as a tool for:

  • spinal support

  • movement quality

  • nervous system regulation

  • force production

  • resilience

And when intensity increases, we coach proper tension breathing through the mouth strategically during exertion phases.

Because if breathing mechanics break down, movement quality eventually breaks down too.

C-Centration

Centration refers to the positioning and stability of the joints.

Most importantly:

  • the shoulders

  • the hips

But really, all joints matter.

Joint centration means the body is able to maintain optimal joint positioning while moving and producing force.

When joints lose centration:

  • force leaks occur

  • compensation increases

  • instability rises

  • injury risk increases

At Qi Movements, we constantly coach:

  • shoulder positioning

  • hip positioning

  • scapular control

  • pelvic control

  • tension management

  • joint integrity under load

This is especially important when progressing into heavier strength training.

Because loading dysfunctional joints only reinforces dysfunction.

The body must first earn stability before it earns intensity.

D-Distribution

Distribution is about how force moves through the body.
Also known as load share.

This includes:

  • load sharing

  • pressure management

  • balance

  • force transfer

  • grounding

We teach clients about:

  • tripod foot positioning

  • tripod hand positioning

  • proper weight distribution

  • pressure through the floor

  • tension through the kinetic chain

The feet and hands become the body’s connection points to the environment.

If those foundations collapse:

  • stability decreases

  • force transfer weakens

  • compensation increases

At Qi Movements, we are constantly coaching clients to feel:

  • where their weight is

  • how force is being transferred

  • how to maintain balance and stability under movement and load

Because efficient movement starts from the ground up.

ABCD Is the Standard for Functional Movement

Every single movement we coach must satisfy the ABCD criteria:

  • Alignment

  • Breathing

  • Centration

  • Distribution

These are the foundations of quality movement.

If one of these breaks down, it tells us something important:

the exercise selection or intensity may be inappropriate for that person in that moment.

That does not mean failure.

It means feedback.

This is why coaching matters.

At Qi Movements, we are constantly adjusting:

  • exercise selection

  • regressions

  • progressions

  • intensity

  • tempo

  • load

  • positioning

To help clients find the sweet spot between:

intention, intensity, and function.

The ABCD Applies to Every Fundamental Human Movement Pattern

Whether someone is performing:

  • a push

  • a pull

  • a lunge

  • a hinge

  • a squat

  • or a carry

The ABCD principles apply.

These are not isolated concepts.

They are the foundation of all quality human movement.

This is how we create:

  • stronger bodies

  • more resilient joints

  • safer lifting mechanics

  • better movement efficiency

  • long-term progress

Why Expert Coaching Matters

Anyone can hand someone a workout.

Very few people can coach movement properly.

Because real coaching means observing:

  • breathing cadence

  • spinal positioning

  • joint integrity

  • movement sequencing

  • force distribution

  • nervous system regulation

Every single repetition.

That is why every client at Qi Movements is coached closely throughout their sessions.

Because details matter.

Small compensations repeated thousands of times eventually become big problems.

But quality movement repeated consistently becomes transformation.

This Is Where Function Meets Intensity

At Qi Movements, we absolutely believe in intensity.

We want people:

  • lifting heavier

  • becoming stronger

  • building muscle

  • improving performance

  • developing resilience

But intensity must never come at the expense of function.

The goal is not simply to work harder.

The goal is to move better while becoming stronger.

That is the sweet spot.

And this is where:

  • individualized programming

  • expert coaching

  • movement progressions

  • and periodized training

become transformational.

Because when the body is coached properly and progressed intelligently:

the results can be extraordinary.

If Every Coach Taught ABCD, The Industry Would Change

Because movement quality is not optional.

It is foundational.

If a coach is ignoring:

  • alignment

  • breathing

  • joint centration

  • or distribution

they are doing people a disservice.

Especially adults over 45 who need intelligent progression, stability, and longevity-focused training.

The fitness industry has normalized:

  • poor movement

  • compensation

  • random intensity

  • burnout

  • injury

At Qi Movements, we believe it is time to raise the standard.
