6 Ways to Regulate Your Nervous System in a Chaotic World

I've been an active trainer for a long time.

Early in my career, my focus was almost entirely on doing more—lifting heavier weights, pushing through hard cardio sessions, and chasing high-intensity interval training. If I wasn't sweating, I felt like I wasn't making progress.

As I've grown, both as a coach and as a person, my perspective has changed.

I still believe in strength. I still believe in challenging ourselves. But I've come to appreciate something that was missing in my early years: rest, recovery, sleep, and rejuvenation aren't separate from progress, they're part of it.

The stronger I've become, the more I've realized that true health isn't built by constantly pushing harder. It's built by knowing when to push and when to recover.

Today, we live in an incredibly chaotic world.

Our attention is pulled in every direction by notifications, emails, social media, deadlines, news, and endless responsibilities. We move quickly from one task to the next, often without giving ourselves a moment to simply breathe.

It's no surprise that nervous system regulation has become such a common conversation.

And for good reason.

When our nervous system spends too much time in a fight-or-flight state, our bodies become focused on survival rather than thriving. Our breathing becomes shallow. Our muscles stay tense. Our thoughts race. We become more reactive, less patient, and more emotionally exhausted.

Over time, chronic stress can affect our sleep, digestion, immune function, recovery, decision-making, and overall quality of life.

On the other hand, when we intentionally create moments of calm, our bodies begin to shift into a recovery state.

Our breathing slows.

Our heart rate settles.

Blood flow returns to the prefrontal cortex—the part of the brain responsible for clear thinking, emotional regulation, creativity, and wise decision-making.

Instead of simply reacting to life, we begin responding to it with greater clarity and intention.

This doesn't require hours of meditation or expensive wellness gadgets.

In my experience, it's often the small things that make the biggest difference.

Sometimes the healthiest thing we can do is less.

Sometimes it's simply having a few basic strategies that bring us back to ourselves.

Here are six of my favourites.

1. Spend Time in Nature 🌿

Even five or ten minutes outside can make a meaningful difference.

Go for a walk.

Sit on a park bench.

Drink your morning coffee outside.

Listen to the birds.

Feel the breeze.

Nature has a remarkable way of reminding our nervous system that we're safe.

2. Practice 5-10 Breathing 🌬️

This has been one of my favourite daily practices.

Inhale gently through your nose for 5 seconds.

Exhale slowly through the mouth for 10 seconds.

Continue for three to five minutes.

The extended exhale encourages your body to shift toward recovery and helps quiet both the mind and the body.

3. Listen to Music 🎵

Music has an incredible ability to change our internal state.

Whether it's instrumental piano, calming acoustic music, nature sounds, or a favourite playlist that helps you feel grounded, music can gently shift your mood and create space from the stress of the day.

Sometimes one song is enough to change the direction of an afternoon.

4. Get Morning Sunlight ☀️

Try to spend five to ten minutes outside during the first hour after waking.

Morning sunlight helps regulate your body's internal clock, supports healthy energy throughout the day, and improves sleep at night.

One simple habit can positively influence your entire day.

5. Practice Gratitude 🙏

Gratitude doesn't need to be complicated.

Simply ask yourself:

What's one thing that's going well today?

What's one thing I'm grateful for?

Our brains naturally look for problems to solve. Taking a minute to notice what's already good helps create balance and reminds us that not every moment requires fixing.

6. Journal Your Thoughts ✍️

One of the simplest ways to regulate your mind is to get your thoughts onto paper.

Spend five minutes writing without worrying about grammar or structure.

Try asking yourself:

What's on my mind today?

What am I feeling?

What's one thing I can let go of?

What's one thing I can control today?

Journaling creates space between you and your thoughts. Instead of carrying everything in your head, you give yourself an opportunity to process, reflect, and move forward with greater clarity.

Harmony Over Hustle

At Qi Movements, we often talk about building health that lasts a lifetime.

That isn't achieved by constantly doing more.

It's achieved through harmony.

Some days your body needs a challenging workout.

Other days it needs a walk in nature.

Some days it needs to lift heavy.

Other days it needs an early bedtime and a few deep breaths.

Health isn't found at either extreme. It's found in learning to listen to what your body needs and responding with compassion.

These small daily practices may seem insignificant on their own, but like strength training, nutrition, or cardio, they compound over time.

Small actions.

Repeated consistently.

Remarkable results.

That's the philosophy we teach every day at Qi Movements.

Yours in wellness,

Brien
